Pastor’s Column

I am glad to be back after a trip to Knoxville for the high school graduation of a niece. I am grateful to Richard Thompson for preaching in my absence. We are fortunate in having talented members of the church who are able to handle things while I am away.

My heart, like yours, was touched by scenes from the after-effects of the tornado in Oklahoma.  It is hard to imagine all the people whose lives are in upheaval as a result of such a furious storm.  On Monday morning families gathered in homes for breakfast. Shortly thereafter parents headed off for work and children left for school, none knowing of the havoc that awaited them. I suspect it is a good thing that we are not aware of the future; otherwise, we would be paralyzed by fear, and robbed of joy and peace of mind. It is good that we have faith in a God who never abandons us and has a promising future planned for us. Meanwhile, we love and care for one another. Let us pray for those who are now in distress in Oklahoma and the people and agencies who are offering assistance to them.

John Wilkerson, chair of our building team, has reminded us that we have an opportunity to make our new building more serviceable by sacrificial giving. We need $385,000.00 to enter a building that will be pleasing to behold and without debt. This will be our gift to the next generations of Christians. It will enable us to minister to people in Northwest Columbus for years to come. We need to have this money come in over the next month in order to be of use while construction is proceeding apace. I hope you will make this a matter of earnest prayer and generosity.

Looking at the calendar, I want to encourage you to be sure to mark May 26 on your calendar. That evening we will gather at Homestead Park for our annual church picnic.

One thing more. We will be operating a booth at the Franklin County Fair, July 13-20. This will be another way to let folks know the newest church in town! You are welcome to help operate the booth!

I look forward to seeing you Sunday.

YOUTH AND EDUCATION

Sunday School Workers Meeting: Planted In The Gospel

No matter how much you desire for the people in our church or community to be changed for mission and justice, until the Gospel transforms us, nothing we do will transform others. As God transforms and shapes us. We then become effective and fruitful. This session challenges us to remain planted in the transforming message of the gospel. All teachers and Sunday school leaders are invited to join us for this session on Wednesday, June 5th, at 7:00 p.m. (Please note date change.) We will continue our discussion on the series “Unleashed for the Gospel.” This session features Eric Mason of Epiphany fellowship. Class members who wish to transform their classes are invited too. You won’t want to miss this discussion!

 YOUTH SOFTBALL

Youth softball begins on June 23rd. Youth who have completed grades 5th through 12th are eligible to play. Players must register in advance to play on the team. Registration is $20.00 and includes a newly designed team shirt. The shirts are also available for purchase for $14.00 for youth who do not wish to play on the team. All games take place on Sunday evenings at Thompson Park on Lane Road. The schedule will be published as soon as it is available.

CLUB VBS, JUNGLE JAUNT: July 7th – 11th VOLUNTEERS AND CHILDREN: REGISTER NOW!

Club VBS will again take place at a park! This year,   join us at Homestead Park outside of Hilliard. Another  change is that VBS will take place from 6:00 – 8:00  p.m., in the evening. This means that more volunteers will be available, and we need your help! Contact Debbie Oliphant or me for more information. Register online now, at the church website www.crossingcommunity.org

 LIFETREE CAFÉ

“The Majesty and Mystery of Nature”

The majesty and mystery of nature will be explored at Lifetree Café. The program celebrates nature and considers how human interaction is impacting the environment. The program includes a screening of the award-winning short film “Saving Valentina,” depicting the actual attempted rescue of a whale that was ensnared in a fishing net. Invite a friend and come join in the conversation at Lifetree Café this Monday, May 27th. The Café experience provides a comfortable place and time to gather weekly to explore life and faith. We meet in the Tree of Life cafeteria every Monday at 7:00 p.m. Snacks and refreshments are provided. Child care is available upon request. Visit the web site at lifetreecafe.com for more information or “Like” our Facebook page at Lifetree Café Upper Arlington.

Cedar Campus Update!

Just two weeks ago, 55 Ohio State students made the trek up to Cedar Campus in Upper Peninsula Michigan to spend a week with Jesus and community! We studied the book of Mark in-depth throughout the week. Students met with Jesus in deep, new ways as we studied his life and ministry in this gospel. Through worship, teaching, and fun time on the waterfront, students grew in their faith and friendships. It was a wonderful way to end the school year!

Congratulations to this year’s graduates! May God bless you in your future endeavors!

Information on summer Bible studies coming soon!

STOWE UPDATE

Dear CCC family,

376 people were served at the Stowe Baptist Center Soup Kitchen in May. I would like to especially thank Paul and Bonnie Althoff, Marcel Althoff, Bill Coulter, and Karen Mogren who helped prepare and serve the meal. Their love and service to God’s people is most appreciated. I could not do it without your prayers, financial support, and willingness to cook, and to go and serve as needed.  With the increase in the number of people we are serving, there is a need for more people to help.  Three people in addition to me are needed to travel to Stowe on the third Tuesday of every month.  We cook on the third Monday of every month, and then serve on Tuesday, at 10:00 a.m.  I’d love to have you participate any way you can.  This ministry is greatly needed.  I appreciate all of your efforts so much.  Your sister-in-Christ, Kathy Leach

 SUNDAY MORNING REFRESHMENTS

Each Sunday morning, a Sunday School class  will be responsible for refreshments.  Coffee needs to be made by 8:30 a.m.  Please plan refreshments for about 50 people.  Each class can decide how they would like to arrange to cover the coffee-making and refreshments for their month.  The schedule for the next few months includes:  May – Adult B; and June – Adult E; July – Internationals; and August – Adult II.

Pastor’s Column

This coming Sunday, May 19, I will be in Knoxville to celebrate the graduation of a niece from high school. Kathy’s youngest sister is about to become an empty nester. Time flies! When someone comes to celebrate the graduation of all your children from high school and college, you want to return the favor. You are in for a treat this Sunday. The Redbuds will be playing once again at the worship services and Richard Thompson will be delivering the sermon.

I am so grateful for the response of members of the church last Friday evening in going to Weaver Middle School in Hilliard to distribute cookies and Kool-Aid to the walk for cancer. Shannon Oliphant helped arrange for us to be there and we mingled with the people of the community and distributed literature about our church. We were excited to learn that the people of that community are aware of the construction of the new facility and seem to be happy to have us be there! I have received phone calls and emails from people in that neighborhood. We have been getting visitors from the area to our services here. So, these are times to rejoice. God has been so good to us!

John Wilkerson, chair of our building team, has reminded us that we have an opportunity to make our new building more serviceable by sacrificial giving. We need $385,000.00 to enter a building that will be pleasing to behold and without debt. This will be our gift to the next generations of Christians.

I look forward to seeing you Sunday.

     Your Pastor,

     Wayne

All teachers and Sunday school leaders are invited to join us for this session on Wednesday, May 29th at 7:00 p.m. We will continue our discussion on the series “Unleashed for the Gospel.” This session features Eric Mason of Epiphany fellowship. Class members who wish to transform their classes are invited too. You won’t want to miss this discussion!

WOMEN’S MORNING BIBLE STUDY

An invitation is extended to all CCC women to join us at 9:15 a.m., on Tuesday, May 14th, as we begin a two-week, video-based, Bible Study by Mary Jo Sharpe, “Why Do You Believe That?” Here is a summary of the content:  When it comes to talking about matters of faith, how confident do you feel?  Do you wish expressing your beliefs about Jesus with others was easier?  Join Mary Jo Sharp in a practical Bible study that will equip you to have meaningful spiritual conversations.  You’ll gain skills to communicate more effectively, and you’ll better understand your own faith.  Answer your doubts, build your confidence, and start changing lives – one conversation at a time. We meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month at 9:15 a.m. You may contact Nancy Jones at with any questions.

 LADIES COFFEE “KLATSCH”

Ladies, we invite you to join us on Thursday mornings for Christian fellowship and a good cup of coffee at 9:00 a.m., at Panera Bread at Tremont.

STOWE UPDATE

Dear CCC family,

236 people were served at the Stowe Baptist Center Soup Kitchen in April. I would like to especially thank Paul and Bonnie Althoff, Bill Coulter, and Jenifer Wilkerson who helped prepare and serve the meal.

Invite a friend and come join in the conversation at Lifetree Café.

THANKS for going “out on a limb.”

The Lifetree Café motto is “Doing Life. Doing Good,” and encourages us to go “out on a limb” by reaching out into our community, our nation, and even our world. Thanks to many of you who supported the “Help Squash Malaria” campaign, we collected $273.00 or enough to buy 46 nets. Each net can protect up to three children, so potentially, 138 children will be protected as a result of your support!  If you are interested in further support of this campaign, or even going on an international mission trip, please let me know.

In His Service,

Tracy

Annie Armstrong Offering

An angel of the Lord spoke to Philip: ‘Get up and go south  to the road that goes down from  Jerusalem to Gaza.’ 27So he got up and went. There was an Ethiopian man, a eunuch and high official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to worship in Jerusalem 28and was sitting in his chariot on his way home, reading the prophet Isaiah aloud. 29The Spirit told Philip, ‘Go and join that chariot.’ 30When Philip ran up to it, he heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, ‘Do you understand what you’re reading?’ 31‘How can I,’ he said, ‘unless someone guides me?’ So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.”   (Acts 8:26-31 HCSB)

Dear Friends of Crossing Community,

I want to thank you so much for the generous gifts, the lovely cards and your kind words of appreciation this past Sunday.  Your thoughtfulness is appreciated!!!  I look forward to being of service to our Lord for many years to come.

Sincerely,

Nancy Cheek

Pastor’s Column

What a lovely day it was last Sunday as we gathered for the dedication of Zacary Jaymes Wheeler to the Lord. We rejoice with Ryan and Meri at the birth of Zacary. They are doing a great job, because he sure is one healthy and handsome young man! Proud grandparents are Bill and Michelle Morris and Craig and Sharon Bechler. With a family like this, Zacary has a head start in life! On the preceding Saturday the funeral service for B J Wagner was held here. B J was a woman who brought a lot of joy to us and we will miss her. She was part of a wonderful family and we commend them to the comfort of our heavenly Father. We also will want to keep in our prayers Tim and Missy Tesner. The unexpected death of their second son, Anthony, has left us all speechless. It is such a tragedy. God bless the family!

On Sunday mornings we are looking at the mystery and marvel of prayer. Prayer is a most extraordinary gift God has shared with us. It is one of our connections with God, and, I suppose, one we may underutilize. So, on Sunday mornings, I am making no assumptions of how far along people may be in their prayer life. I am starting from scratch. Prayer for beginners, if you will. Spurgeon once said, “On his knees the believer is invincible.” On Sunday evenings Brian Harper is leading us in an interesting study, Outlive Your Life. You will want to be here for this!

I look forward to seeing you this coming Sunday.

Your Pastor,
Wayne
